1. Make Lists

One of the first things you can do before moving is to write everything down. Sit down and consider what should be done for your big move. Then, you can work off of those lists.

Try to organize your “to do’s” in ways that make sense to you. This can be by time frame leading up to the move or by priority of what you feel is most important. Having everything out of your head and on a list will ease stress and allow you to check off items as you go.

2. Organize and Downsize

Moving is a great time to get rid of things you no longer have a need for. Plus, you can give these items a second life! Begin by organizing your belongings into piles. Examples could be: keep, toss, sell, donate.

The things you decide to keep can be packed away. Then, you can donate other items to a local organization or thrift store. Or, sell the items that you no longer need on an online marketplace.

3. Research and Hire Movers

Think about it: hiring movers will alleviate a lot of stress during the moving process. If your budget has room for it, research movers in your area as soon as you know you’re moving and secure them for your preferred moving date.

Putting this task off can result in movers not being available on the day you need them. You want to trust your movers to help you have a seamless move-in day!

4. Seek Help From Friends and Rent a Truck

If hiring movers is not in your budget, do not be afraid to ask your friends and family for help. Plus, the sooner they put it on their schedule, the more likely they are to stick to their agreement to help. You don’t want to end up alone on moving day!

Also, be sure to secure your rental truck ahead of time. This way, you avoid trucks being unavailable or only getting the truck for a limited amount of time.

5. Request Time Off Work

If you know you will need time off from work to move, request those dates as soon as possible. This way if anything comes up, you can guarantee time is set aside with no scheduling conflicts.

6. Hire a Babysitter or Pet Sitter

Moving day isn’t just stressful for you, but for your kids and pets, too! Big changes can be hard on children and animals and having someone for them to hang out with on moving day can be helpful for everyone.

Hiring a babysitter or pet sitter will take away some stress from moving for everyone involved.

7. Deep Clean

The best thing to do to keep your move stress free is to clean as you go. For example, if you pack up your kitchen first, deep clean it as soon as you’re done and then consider that area “off limits.” Do this with each room as you completely pack it.

This will help you realize how many rooms you have left while keeping you organized along the way. Then, all you have left is an easy wipe down and sweep before you leave each room.

8. Create a Packing System

Packing may seem like a huge feat, but it is doable! Make the packing process stress free by buying packing materials ahead of time. Also, buy a little more than you think you will need. You never know what may come up! Also, many places buy back unused packing

Although there is no way to completely avoid the trouble of packing up your life into boxes when you move, you can make it less stressful by taking pictures and organizing. Examples include labeling each box with a specific color. Then you will know where each box should be placed as it is unloaded. Plus, pictures help you remember what contents are inside. Don’t do double work, sort your belongings by room and unpack the moving truck accordingly!

Bottom Line

The initial work you put into moving day is well worth the ease on the day of the big move. Stay excited on move-in day, after all, this is a very big deal! Then, give yourself a break and consider ordering in food to enjoy a meal while you get acclimated to your new surroundings. After all, you are probably exhausted, and you’ve earned it!
